Nutanix and Control Plane are both in the business of making infrastructure disappear behind one surface; they just start from opposite ends. Nutanix is hyperconverged infrastructure: it pools the compute and storage of servers you own into a private cloud, with the AHV hypervisor underneath. Control Plane is a cloud virtualization platform: it composes AWS, GCP, Azure, Kubernetes clusters, and those same on-prem servers into one virtual cloud you deploy to, with no hypervisor stack of your own to run.
The core difference: virtualize your servers, or virtualize the cloud
Nutanix's center of gravity is the datacenter. You buy or certify hardware, run the Nutanix stack on it, and get a genuinely good private cloud: VMs first, Kubernetes on top, storage and management in one place. The trade is that the platform is yours to operate: hosts, upgrades, capacity planning, and the licensing that comes with it.
Control Plane starts from the cloud and works back. Which fits your scenario
Control Plane fits: a company consolidating out of the datacenter. The hardware refresh is due, the team is tired of hypervisor upgrades, and half the workloads are already containerized. Control Plane runs the containers and the remaining VMs across public clouds and any servers worth keeping, as one platform, while the datacenter footprint winds down on its own schedule.
Nutanix fits: an estate that cannot leave the building. Regulated data with hard residency rules, specialized hardware, or an air-gapped network. If the requirement is a private cloud on your own metal, Nutanix is built for exactly that, and pretending a cloud platform replaces it would be wrong.
